Does LeafWing offer telehealth or only in-person?

LeafWing provides both in-clinic and in-home ABA services. (Check our “Programs” page for specifics on telehealth or home options.)

How long should I try a strategy before calling a therapist?

Give each consistent approach a few weeks, as long as the behavior isn’t worsening. If you’ve tried positive reinforcement and structured routines for 2–3 weeks and see no change, or the child’s safety is at risk, reach out for help.

My child is non-verbal. How can they “ask” for attention or tangibles?

Use alternative communication: simple picture cards, sign language, or a speech app on a tablet. Teach them a way to indicate needs (e.g., showing a picture of a drink for “thirsty”). Then reinforce that behavior with praise and the desired result.

Should I always ignore tantrums?

Not always. If a tantrum is truly a meltdown (sensory overload), the child isn’t “choosing” it. In those cases, help them calm (reduce sensory input, give a safe space) first. If it’s an escape tactic, ignoring and not giving in is often best.

How do I tell if my child’s behavior is attention- or escape-driven?

Look at the context. If screaming brings your focus, attention is likely to follow. If tantrums happen when faced with demands, it’s probably an escape. A behavior specialist can assess this through an FBA.
